Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Anyone Know How Much Longer Furthur Will Go On?

Does anybody know how much longer this current Phil/Bob project is supposed to go on? Because I gotta be honest, as much as I tried to like this particular endeavor, I really don't.

I'm not trying to ruffle any feathers, because from what I have read a lot of people really do seem to like Furthur, and that's cool. If I am in the minority on this one then so be it.

I was fortunate enough to see the Grateful Dead, and after taking a break from the scene for many years after Jerry's passing, I was finally able to embrace all the side projects and realized the music was too good not to continue bringing to the people in whatever format.

I have seen Phil & Friends, Ratdog, Rhythm Devils, and The Dead, and really enjoyed them all.

So when I heard Bob & Phil were playing together again recently, I was very interested to hear it without knowing the rest of the line-up.

I really gave it a chance, but I just thought it was so uninspired and it annoyed me how much the guitar player ripped off Jerry's licks. So I come to find out it's the guy from Dark Star Orchestra, which doesn't surprise me one bit. I really can't figure out what the fascination with them is. I won tickets to one of their shows and went in very open minded, and was so unimpressed I left halfway through the first set.

Again, I'm not trying to piss anyone off that loves both bands, and don't bother trying to convince me either band is worth checking out again--I have plenty of amazing music to listen to thanks to GD, JGB, Phil, Ratdog, etc. so I don't need to revisit anything that I didn't like the first time through.

I just wondered if anybody has heard any rumors as far as Phil and Bob getting back to their other bands, as I like them a lot more than Furthur.

I used to love Ratdog, but sometime in the last couple years I've lost interest. The last two Ratdog shows I went to never got off the ground for me, in part because every time the band would start to ramp it up, Bobby would make some signal and they'd all slow down. Felt like every song was the exact same tempo.

When I first saw P&F in 2001 I was blown away. But again, the last few times I've seen them I wasn't overly impressed. For one thing, I really can't handle listening to Phil sing, especially Jerry tunes. But also when he has other members of the band sing, I was at a show where the guy clearly didn't know the lyrics and was not in sync with the music at all as he tried to read them.

And while I loooove Warren, I couldn't stand the Dead tour he was on. Way too much happening on stage and it became the Warren show, which is fine if I want Mule or the Allmans or such, but not when I want the Dead.

As to Furthur...better than the 09 Dead tour, but it still doesn't do it for me. And I like John K - been seeing Dark Star for years and have no complaints (I know what I'm getting when I go see them).

Thankfully I have hours and hours of the real thing to listen to, and plenty of other bands to go see live.

"I was at a show where the guy clearly didn't know the lyrics"

The guy from the Black Crows, forgive me if I'm wrong.... Chris Robinson. While I love PLF, This was not his best grouping.

And why was Molo replaced with Sipe for several shows?

Well, I do know that Furthur has tour dates booked all the way through September. I've Bobby say that he really enjoys playing with John K from a couple of interviews that I've heard and read.
My guess is, Bobby will probably do his Ratdog Daze thing in Jamiaca in 2011 if nothing else. But it looks like Furthur is going to be around for a little while at least.
I do think Furthur (spelled w/a U) is a really good band. But I have to agree with you a little bit, I was just beginning to realize how awesome Ratdog was as a band, and then BOOM, Furthur takes over the whole scene.

I hope they go further, and FURther, and FURTHER. The greatest compliment anyone could pay to Jerry is to emulate his play on the guitar, Doesn't bother me in the least, as a matter of fact....more Jerry please !

i hope it goes on for awhile. cause after there dead and gone whats next?? old recordings that all sound the same after awhile?then i guess any band playing dead tunes is a cover band after that.i still dont understand how people classify orginal members as a cover band. i dont think it matters who's playing lead. jerry;s been gone to long fo me personaly to even compare how it was.i take it how it is in the moment and enjoy the show like it was my last. cause someday its gonna be.for me personaly id rather be at a live show even if its a bad night.than to be sitting here typing this crap listening to the same old recordings. something new is always exciting no matter who's playing in the band. just my opinion.for years people used to holla "let phil sing" now that he does seems like no ones ever happy. i like furthe and all the other bands put toghether after jerry.i feel there all musicians and thats what there good at playing.so thats what their doing.http://www.archive.org/details/furthur2010-05-29.nak300.gilmore.108047.flac16

Well, I think I like Further better than the 09 tour, but I also like the last incarnations of P+Fs, and Ratdog , maybe even more . Phil and Bob must think he is the shit , and I have to say, they jam well together . The problem, is the closer you get to the old GD sound, the more Jerry's absence is noticed . Blair Jackson has an interesting interview with John at Dead Net , worth checking out .
I would have to say, I like his guitar playing/sound more than Warren, but his singing is just OK, where Warren was awesome .
I think John's playing is getting freer with the group, so we shall see ( hear ).
I hope we have not heard the end of Phil's musical partnership with John Molo, for instance .

I think Jeff Mattson would've been a better fit. He knows Jerry's licks, but does them in his own style. The singing voice is the key component. He can sing just like Jerry.

'95 was better than '09 The Dead

...although '09 did get progressively better as the tour wore on, but still

Even, a limping, busted up Jerry is better that anyone else, but this is no offense to Warren etc., it's just there was only one Garcia . Now there are things they have dome in the post Jerry bands, that make you think, Damn, why couldn't they have done this with Garcai "! . Some of my reservations as pertaining to the 09 Dead", has to do with, not just the "No Jerry" factor, but the , usual 2 drummers problems , and a general lack of energy . My favorite comment about one of the shows was."Man , these guys need to drink 5 Red Bulls each, before the concert ". I don't mind slow ( big 76 fan), but they sounded thick, and sluggish, sometimes .
In contrast, Phil with Molo never sound that way . I think if you compare "Futhur" with the other post big guy groupings, they come out pretty good .
And "in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king ".

I have heard as much and hope to experience it first-hand even though I said after G'boro '09 that I would never see another GD reunion group. I think Furthur will have a hard time topping '02 TOO though. That tour was magical...at least the Roanoke opener was.

Best time I had @ a post - '95 event was 8 - 3 -04 ( as The Dead ). Heavy Pig show - H2H , Mr. C. , Alligator . Some real curveballs as well . The reviewed show has the best sound to me . A bit spotty , but better then '09 . Anytime they play TTMC I cringe .

For a real good time > PnF , 4 - 16 - 99 , H >S > F ,WYWH
and most of all PnF 4 - 17 - 99 DS > IUTY , DBetween > DS > MFT , BSong

Amen to that 4/17/99 show! Check out the end of Terrapin (with the DS blend). I personally think Phil had the best post Dead bands (many different incarnations, varying degree of success, but always interesting in its' interpretation).

I'm going to give that Roanoke show a listen since I never have before. Doesn't seem to have got a lot of attention on the Archive - no reviews, not many downloads - but that doesn't necessarily count for much.

By the way, while I'm here just how many gtrs have you actually clkted?

rob I hope you will find the magic in that Roanoke show

I will admit there were several "outside" factors that contributed to the magic for me, but Jerry was in that coliseum with "the boys" that night. And having R.Hunter do a set between TOO's sets didn't hurt.

well, "gtrs'(and other stringed instruments)I have 15 of varying ages, state of repair and collectiblity

6 acoustic(6 string, 12 string and Hawaiian)
3 electric(6 string only)
3 bass(4 string...is there any other "real" bass?)
2 ukulele(soprano)
1 banjo(5 string)

jonesing hard for my first mandolin

also assorted
penny whistles
native flutes
kazoo
keyboard
and a "toy" drum machine(my grandson left it for me to play with)

Bill - I'm sorry I failed to respond to you - got tied up in off-forum aka 'real life' stuff, but just wanted you to know that I appreciated you taking the time to tell me about your collection. All I have myself is an acoustic twelve string and an electric six (used to have an acoustic six but it left this world in the course of a domestic realignment...) Hope you're giving all your instruments a regular workout!

no worries
life has a way of bringing us back to reality when we least expect it

unfortunately not much of "the collection" gets regular exercise
